Terrorism Travel Insurance
Although no one likes to think about it, acts of terrorism do happen. If you plan to travel overseas, especially in a region where attacks have occurred in the past, you might want to think about adding terrorism coverage to your trip interruption insurance.
Terrorism travel insurance goes above and beyond standard trip cancellation insurance, and gives you added financial protection in the event that a terrorist attack results in flight cancellations or otherwise makes travel impossible. Terrorism coverage can pay for extended hotel stays, alternative transportation, meals and, in some cases, lost or damaged belongings.
Choosing Terrorism Insurance Coverage
Each type of terrorism insurance coverage is a bit different, so be sure to choose a policy that includes trip interruption insurance. This will cover your flight home in the event that an attack causes you to have to cut your trip short. Your terrorism coverage should also include trip cancellation insurance, which will reimburse you if you need to cancel your travel plans due to an attack in the region where you plan to travel.
Some terrorism insurance coverage also includes death and dismemberment coverage. This type of policy compensates family members in the event of a traveler's terrorism-related death. Such policies also include coverage for injuries not resulting in death, but which may later prevent you from working or otherwise leading a normal life.
Check Travel Warnings for Terrorism Coverage
If you're not sure if your travel destination warrants the purchase of terrorism travel insurance, check the U.S. Department of State's Travel Warnings list. This list contains information on all the countries the U.S. government has determined to be dangerous, unstable or that pose risks to travelers.
Foreign and Domestic Terrorism Travel Insurance
Most terrorism travel insurance policies offer only trip interruption insurance and trip cancellation insurance when you're traveling abroad, but some policies also include coverage for domestic travel. If you'd like terrorism insurance coverage for travel within the United States, ask your travel agent or insurance provider about adding this option to your travel insurance policy.
